Bac Giang - VietGap lychee cultivation area increases

This year, Bac Giang province sees a flowering rate of about 90-95 percent for the early-ripening lychee and 85-90 percent for the main-crop lychee (over 95 percent in Luc Ngan district), 1.5 times higher than those of the lychee season 2020. The area of lychees grown under clean standards has expanded, according to provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Development.

Bac Giang has more than 28,000 ha of lychees (the production plan in 2021 is 27,700 ha), mainly in Luc Ngan, Luc Nam, Tan Yen and Son Dong districts. Dang Van Tang, Director of Bac Giang Cultivation and Plant Protection Sub-department, said that the area of lychees under VietGAP standard reaches 15,500 ha, an increase of 700 ha against last year.

As this year lychees exported to Japan are cultivated up to VietGAP standard, the GlobalGAP lychee farming area is stable as compared to the previous year, at nearly 340 ha. Particularly, the area of lychees exported to Japan increased by 116 ha over last year, including 20 ha in Tan Yen and Luc Nam and the rest in Luc Ngan.

Currently, the weather is very favorable for lychees to bloom and fruit, signaling a bumper harvest. The localities are directing farmers to prepare all the best conditions, from materials to techniques, to care for the trees to grow and develop well.

Vice Chairman of the Luc Ngan district People's Committee Nguyen The Thi said, with the aim of ensuring the quality of lychees grown in the code-granted areas, the district has instructed specialized agencies to implement an array of measures right from the moment of flowering. It has established many working groups coming to communes and households to guide farmers to apply correct caring techniques, prioritizing households who have been given growing area codes for export to demanding markets.
