Pacific oyster culture in Cam Lâm looks perfectly efficient

Pacific oyster farming in Cam Lâm district along Thủy Triều pond looks perfectly efficient, helping farmers have stable income.

Farmer Nguyễn Thành Đen from Cam Hải Đông commune have reared pacific oysters since 2015. He has eight oyster rafts, each of which was invested six million VND. He gets about two tons of oyster from each raft. They are sold at 30,000 – 35,000 VND per kilo, making Đen earns around 25 million VND from each raft and over 100 million VND averagely each year. Huỳnh Ngọc Tấn from Thuỷ Triều village is making two more oyster rafts. He has now total five rafts, three of which have over 1,400 baskets with 30-40 oysters each. A household may earn 11-12million VND each month if the weather is favorable and oysters are sold at high price.

Nguyễn Thị Nhặn – Deputy Head Industry-Agriculture-Forestry-Fisheries Extension Station in Cam Lâm said that the district has about ten households who farm pacific oysters along Thủy Triều pond, mainly in Cam Hải Đông and Cam Hải Tây communes. There are three or four households doing large business. Farmers have been enabled in oyster culture thanks to favorable weather, light rain, abundant resources of feed. Nhặn said that in spite of economic benefit and stable income from oyster culture, local authorities do not encourage expansion of this system but remain as it is now. They explains that high stocking density within such ponds will have bad impact to water resources and environment, besides the output of oyster is not steady as supply may exceed demand.
