CAN THO – Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc has approved a hi-tech park for shrimp farming in the Mekong Delta province of Bac Lieu.

The 420-hectare park in Hiep Thanh Commune, Bac Lieu City will be home to science and technology organizations that will specialize in developing advanced technology for the shrimp farming sector, and creating hi-tech shrimp farming models.

The park will be also responsible for doing research and development projects, demonstrating high-tech shrimp farming models, and providing human resource training for the industry.

It will be a venue for events, fairs and exhibitions on shrimp farming technology as well.

Bac Lieu will have around 131,000 hectares under shrimp farming by 2020, the second highest behind Ca Mau with 313,000 hectares. The figure will fall to 127,700 hectares by 2030, according to a master plan for brackish water shrimp farming in the Mekong Delta by 2020 with a vision to 2030.

A report of the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers shows the export value of the seafood sector last year totaled US$7.1 billion, of which US$3.2 billion came from shrimp alone.
