Vietnam must up productivity to hit $10bn export target

Vietnam needs to significantly increase its shrimp productivity if it is to hit the $10 billion export turnover target by 2025, as set by the government, said Pham Anh Tuan, former deputy general director of the directorate of fisheries.

Between 2010 and 2016 export value of shrimp rose 7.2% per year; this needs to rise to 14% per year to hit the target.

Production capacity rose 5.3% per year in this period, and needs to increase by 11-12%, he said.

Hence the need to both expand the area available for farming, and raise productivity too. In 2016, he said, Vietnam had production capacity of 630,000 metric tons.
