Vietnams exports to Algeria decline over five-month period

The first five months of the year saw Vietnam's exports to Algeria drop by 7 per cent to US$83.24 million in comparison with the same period last year, according to statistics released by the General Department of Vietnam Customs.

Coffee is the leading export commodity to Algeria

This decline is attributable to the fact that the Algerian government has applied provisional additional safeguard duties on 1,098 import items from Vietnam along with the sudden plunge in the export price of Vietnamese coffee.

Coffee is the leading export commodity to Algeria with 30,559 tons valued at US$49.47 million being exported to the North African country during 2019 so far. These figures represent a fall of 12 per cent in volume, 23 per cent in value, and account for a total of 59 per cent of the country’s total export turnover to the Algerian market.

Other metal products take second place on the list of exports with turnover reaching US$8.22 million,  followed by mobile phones and spare parts at US$6.84 million, seafood at US$3.95 million, chemical products at US$2.45 million, and rice at US$1.2 million.

One positive sign coming from the market is that the Algerian government have recently ended an import ban on mobile phones and spare parts, which is predicted to contribute to increasing Vietnam’s export turnover to the North African nation in the remaining months of the year.
