Calculating the long run for mango, towards high-end export markets
Development of mango export in the agricultural restructuring model is the direction of the agricultural sector of An Giang province with the goal of linking and producing in the VietGAP way.
Heighten mango production value
In the 2017-2020 period, the whole An Giang province has converted more than 31,130ha of inefficient rice land to cultivating land for vegetables and fruit trees. The conversion models have brought economic efficiency many times higher than before. To be specific, the model of mango has a profit of VND 500-600 million/ha after 3 years of investment.
Currently, more than 60% of mango growers in An Giang apply the fruit wrapping technique, helping to improve the quality of mangoes. Mr. Tran Phuoc Duong, in Tan Phuoc hamlet, Tan My commune, Cho Moi district, shared that his family has 1 hectare of Hoa Loc Cat mango, instead of traditionally planted only earning about VND 160 -170 million/ha/year. For the past two years, the family has applied mango planting using new techniques with fruit wraps to increase productivity and sell at a higher price, so the profit per crop is VND 210-220 million/ha.
According to Mr. Huynh Thanh Minh, Director of Long Binh Cooperative, the cooperative has just bought 10 tons of Keo mangoes to deliver to businesses ordering for domestic consumption and export to countries that require high quality such as Korea, Australia, Japan...
The Cooperative also aims at quality standards to export to high-end markets, instead of depending on uncertain markets like China. Long Binh Cooperative is waiting for the authorities to appraise and issue the number code to export directly to Korea and Japan with higher value.
Toward the exportation of mango
As stated by Mr. Nguyen Si Lam, Director of An Giang Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, in reality, farmers gain much more profit from growing mango than other models. Regarding mango-specialized areas such as Gieng Islands in Cho Moi district, the province supports infrastructure and irrigation systems, directs farmers to grow mangoes according to VietGAP standards, supporting farmers to obtain quality certification to export to high-end markets such as Korea, Japan, Australia, America...
Not long ago, for the first time, the People's Committee of An Giang province announced to export mango in batches to the United States through Chanh Thu Fruit Import and Export Co., Ltd (Ben Tre). In addition, Chanh Thu Company has also agreed to cooperate with Tri Ton and Tinh Bien districts on building mango material areas, meeting the requirements of farming techniques, ensuring export standards to fastidious markets, especially the US market.
According to Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Mr. Tran Thanh Nam, Vietnam has 87,000 hectares of mango, and 48% of the area resides in Cuu Long Delta. It is expected that by 2030, the area of fruit nationwide will reach 1.3 million hectares, the fruit output of the whole country will reach over 16 million tons. Particularly, the Mekong Delta region by 2030 will increase by 300,000 ha, reaching 680,000 ha.
This is also the sixth Vietnamese fruit licensed to export to the US market, only after dragon fruit, rambutan, longan, lychee, and star apple.
Implementing the pivot of the key product strategy, localities in the region have boldly converted the inefficient rice area, often suffering from drought, to seafood and fruit areas with higher economic efficiency. According to reports, the calculations from the locals have clearly shown that the efficiency of converting crops and aquaculture on rice is much higher.
