New DSM essential oil product improves feed conversion by 1.4%

DSM said its move to innovate, to extend its eubiotics platform underlines its commitment to support industry’s efforts to reduce the use of antibiotics, as it launches a new poultry targeted essential oils product.

It said Crina Digest, consisting of a combination of three essential oil compounds - thymol, eugenol and piperine - ensures a controlled release of bioactives along the gastrointestinal tract, significantly enhancing poultry digestive function. The controlled release is down to the microencapsulation technology used.

Proper digestive function supports animal resilience and welfare and thus helps reduce the use of antibiotics, said the company.

In terms of studies supporting the claims made about Crina Digest, Antoine Meuter, global category manager eubiotics, DSM Animal Nutrition & Health, told FeedNavigator:

“Crina Digest provides a cost-effective solution for producers who want to leverage the impact of essential oils on the productivity of their birds.  ​ 

"In a meta-analysis of six floor-pen-trials run in Europe Middle East & Africa​ (EMEA) in 2018, Crina Digest supplementation significantly improved the feed conversion by 1.4% - a two-point improvement. ​

“Based on this performance improvement coming from enhanced digestion, the cost-benefit of Crina Digest supplemented at 40g/ton of feed is of €4 increased profit for each euro invested.”​

Regulatory tick ​

What about registration?

“Crina Digest is registered, for all poultry species, in EMEA where it is now on sale. Registrations in Latin America (LATAM) and Asia Pacific (APAC) are expected to follow mid-2019,” ​said Meuter.

He said the product complements Crina Poultry Plus, DSM’s essential oils product, which is registered in the EU as a zootechnical feed additive for broilers.

Autumn launch ​

This NPD comes on the back of the recent launch by DSM and its R&D partner, Novozymes, of a new enzyme product targeted at enhanced digestibility in broilers.

The two companies co-developed the ingredient, branded as Balancius. It is designed to remove bacterial cell debris from the animal’s gut, helping to optimize nutritional absorption and digestibility.
