Pig supply decrease causes price increase

Vietnam saw a reduction of 1.2 million pigs in the first half this year, said Mr. Hoang Thanh Van, head of the Livestock Department under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development yesterday explaining the recent price surge.

Pig supply drop has highly increased prices but still ensured domestic consumption demand

At present the country has about 27.2 million pigs that still ensure domestic consumption demand.

Pig price has increased to VND38,000-40,000 a kilogram, much higher than the price a month ago but normal compared to previous years.

According to the Livestock Department, the country consumes 300,000 tons of pork a month and the pig price might raise to VND45,000 a kilogram.

The agency warned breeders and businesses of the unusual price hike which has occurred in some places with supply shortage not in the market.
