Shrimp cultivation in mobile inland ponds in Quảng Ninh
The Quảng Ninh Agricultural Extension Center has just supported five mobile nursery ponds, 229m², in Móng Cái and Tiên Yên districts.
Optimize the effectiveness of the model
At the time this model was introduced, that was the first shrimp nursery pond of Quảng Ninh. However, just after a short time, the province had around 300 ponds, which have been developed effectively for multi-phase shrimp cultivation, super-intensive and intensive models.
A mobile inland nursery pond costs one third of a traditional one. Pond management is easily facilitated without any paddle wheel aerator and a feed tray checking system. A sunproof net system, which can be partly uninstalled, is designed to protect the pond under unfavorable weather conditions and enable shrimps to gradually get used to the outside temperature without getting heat stress. The mobile pond is made of galvanized iron and can contain 1.2 – 1.4m of water level height. Growing tanks are round-shaped with various diameters, a water treatment pond is 1,000.- 1,500 m³ , a nursery pond is 200 – 500 m³, a growing pond is 500 – 1,500 m³.
In a new farm, a settling tank is installed in a new farm to treat wastewater and filter water from a high position and some other ponds of each phase of cultivation are located in accordance with the slope of the farm without deforming or affecting the land. If any, the height of the farm can be an advantage for designing a current so as to save some investment costs of rehabilitation. The existing ponds (5,000 – 7,000 m²) can be easily treated for settlement prevention and a surrounding water system can be designed for installing tanks inside the pond.
The cultivation process in the tank is easy and suitable with a small scale pond and a large farm. A nursery tank can be easily uninstalled and shifted to a different location and adjusted to a suitable size; hence, it’s not necessary to build a new one or remove it.
Easy to install and operate
It takes just 3-5 days to build a mobile inland pond with round shape and a big slope, 5%, to facilitate the collection of discharged substances.
Lower tanks can be built in the next phases where shrimps are partly shifted to a growing pond or another big size pond through a water pipe system by twisting the valve.
In the first phase, shrimp broodstocks are nursed within 20-25 days at a density of 1,500 – 2,500 heads/ m² until they weigh up to the size of 900 – 1,000 count shrimp. In the second phase, shrimps are shifted to a bigger grow-out pond with a stocking density of 300 heads/ m². After 80-100 days old, 40-50 count shrimp can be harvested.
The early mortality syndrome (EMS) reduced when shrimps were 20 days old. The survival rate can reach over 80% at the harvest time. Without using antibiotics or chemical substances or causing any negative environmental concerns, shrimps can grow up in a safe environment, eliminating disease outbreaks. Low FCR and short-time cultivation help reduce production costs by 10-20% as compared to traditional methods. The average output can reach 48-60 tons/ha.
In the future, the appliance of advanced technologies in shrimp cultivation such as microbial technology, biofloc, RAS, water treatment by UV and Ozon, the Quảng Ninh Agriculture Extension Center continues to boost and improve effective models from achievements of mobile inland ponds, gradually contributing into the sustainable development of shrimp sector.
