Trà Vinh succeeds in studying SPF tiger shrimp bloodstock
According to farmers’ assessment said that post larvae were growing well and healthy.
Trà Vinh has more than 17,000 ha of tiger shrimp farming areas while number of post larvae meets only 60% of local demand and 40% must be imported from other provinces. Total area for stocking tiger shrimp was 17,834 ha in 2016 and 1.78 billion post larvae were needed. Meanwhile there are only 83 nursery facilities in the province, meeting 60% of local demand and the rest had to be imported from other provinces. According to plans, Trà Vinh will have 25,788.4 ha of brackish shrimp growing ponds and 11 billion black tiger shrimp and white leg shrimps will be needed. Farmers involved in improved extensive farming model are not so good in improving ponds, selecting PL, raising public awareness. Therefore, shrimps may catch disease and farmers have difficulties in controlling material and quality.
Under the situation, Trà Vinh University conducted a research to create SPF Penaueus monodon bloodstock for PL production facilities in Trà Vinh. This project is led by Doctor Huỳnh Thị Kim Hường, Deputy Head of Agriculture – Fisheries Department in association with her colleagues. The result shows that it takes 13 months for post larvae to become shrimp bloodstock with average size of female shrimps reaching >150g and male ones >100g. Upon the project, 300,000 – 400,000 larvae are born and survival rate of hatchery is 79-80%. According to Regional Animal Health Office No.6 under Animal Health Department, post larvae are high quality and free from such diseases as yellow head, Monodon Baculovirus, and AHPND.
The success of this project will enable sustainable development of shrimp sector in Mekong Delta and the whole country.
