Vietnamese mango exports to U.S enjoying robust increase
In the first eight months of 2020, Vietnam exported to the US market 1,350 tons of mangoes of various kinds, a year-on-year increase of 87.4%.
According to statistics released by the US Department of Agriculture (USDA), in the first eight months of 2020, the US imported over 497,000 tons of mangoes of various types with a value of US$567 million, up 14.7% in volume and 15% in value over the same period in 2019.
Vietnam was the 12th largest mango supplier to the US in the first eight months of the year, reaching 1,350 tons worth US$ 2.8 million, rose by 87.4% in volume and 99.9% in value compared to the same period last year. The import mango prices from Vietnam averaged US$2,065 / ton, up 6.7% over the same period last year, Zing News reported.
Most notably, the US’s import of Vietnamese frozen mango reached 811 tons, worth US$1.36 million, up 40.6% in volume, and 37.5% in value over the same period in 2019. The US’s import of Vietnamese fresh mango stood at 539 tons, worth US$ 1.4 million, up 273.9% in volume and 249.1% in value.
"The high demand for mango imports of the United States is an opportunity for Vietnamese mangoes especially fresh one to expand their market shares in this market”, said the Ministry of Industry and Trade.
To boost the market shares of Vietnamese mangoes in the US, the local firms need to meet strict standards regarding growing areas, processing and packaging facilities that are given relevant codes for management, origin traceability, a quarantine by the Plant Protection Department and the US Department of Agriculture (USDA)'s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS).
